Oakland unified school district foundational literacy professional learning cycles

  • Created a series of professional learning cycles to align OUSD's foundational skills curriculum (SIPPS) with research-based best practices. The resources were designed to support each school site's leadership team to facilitate PL that advances the district's literacy vision, articulated in their Language and Literacy frameworkTopics included:

    • Gathering evidence of student learning in observation and fluency practice

    • Analyzing assessment to inform instruction

    • Shifting the cognitive load through meaningful practice and application

    • Foundational skills instruction for multilingual learners

  • The design process involved input and collaboration from the central literacy team coaches and the director of early literacy

  •  Each professional learning cycle included 3 sessions (a shared learning session, a planning & practice session, and a session to look at student progress) with slide decks, session plans, and detailed information for site-based facilitators.

  • The sessions were published on the districts "Leader Central" website, a hub that supports school site leaders with resources to build their skills and knowledge around literacy.

transitional kindergarten instructional framework

  • EFCPS expanded access to transitional kindergarten as part of a California initiative to phase in universal pre-kindergarten for all 4-year-olds. The Instructional Framework project was a collaboration that came out of the desire to intentionally design early childhood programming that is research-based, developmentally appropriate and facilitates Kindergarten readiness.

  • Collaborated with the TK Dean of Instruction to develop a vision for transitional kindergarten and to codify the essential components of an instructional framework that is grounded in research and developmentally appropriate practice and creates alignment between TK and early elementary instruction.

  • Developed a working document for the network that outlined the key components of the transitional kindergarten program and featured a flexible format that could be adapted for multiple purposes, including internal staff alignment, educator recruitment and training, family engagement and new student outreach.

  • The final document featured:

    • Photos of students and educators from the charter network actively engaged in learning

    • The co-created vision for transitional kindergarten

    • 8 essential components of the approach to instruction

    • Research-based theory around play-based learning and the play spaces and materials students have access to

    • Instructional minutes to enhance alignment across schools

    • Foundational research that guides the work

    • Detailed guidance on teacher training and ongoing professional learning
